If the thought of sitting in a dental chair triggers a racing pulse, sweating palms, or days of dread, you are far from alone. Millions of adults avoid the dentist due to severe fear, dental trauma from childhood, sensitive teeth, or an intense gag reflex. Unfortunately, delaying care often turns minor dental problems into complex, painful emergencies.

At Golden Oak Sedation Dental & Implant Center, our entire practice is designed around removing fear, stress, and discomfort from the equation. With advanced certifications, a dedicated on-site paramedic, and state-of-the-art continuous vital monitoring, we provide safe, customized sedation that lets you sleep or deeply relax while we restore your smile.

Why Choose Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry goes far beyond simply taking the edge off anxiety. It fundamentally transforms your treatment experience:

  • Zero Memory of the Procedure: Deep sedation creates an amnesic effect, meaning you will remember little to nothing about sounds, smells, or vibrations.

  • Combine Multiple Treatments in One Visit: Because you remain perfectly comfortable and relaxed, Dr. Johnny Shanks and our team can perform full-mouth reconstructions, multiple implants, or surgical extractions in a single afternoon.

  • Elimination of Gag Reflexes & Muscle Tension: Sedation relaxes tight facial and neck muscles and suppresses hyperactive gag reflexes, allowing for faster, more precise surgical outcomes.

  • Pain-Free Comfort: Sedative medications work synergistically with localized numbing agents to stop pain before it ever registers in your nervous system.

Our Sedation Options: Finding Your Perfect Level of Calm

We personalize your sedation level based on your personal comfort, health history, and the complexity of your procedure.

  • Lightest relaxation • Moderate "twilight" sleep • Deepest level of comfort
  • Inhaled gas • Prescription medication tablet • Direct intravenous delivery
  • Drive yourself home • Companion required to drive • Companion required to drive

1. Nitrous Oxide (“Laughing Gas”)

  • How it works: A sweet-smelling blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide is inhaled through a lightweight nose mask.

  • How it feels: A warm, buoyant, floating sensation of total ease. You remain completely alert, conscious, and communicative throughout.

  • Key benefit: Nitrous oxide leaves your system within 3 to 5 minutes after the gas is switched off. You can safely drive yourself to and from your appointment and return to your workday without residual grogginess.

2. Oral Conscious Sedation (“Twilight Dentistry”)

  • How it works: You take a carefully calculated prescription pill (such as triazolam or diazepam) approximately one hour before your treatment begins.

  • How it feels: Deep, drowsy calm. While technically awake and responsive to quiet prompts, you will feel completely detached from what is happening around you. Time will seem to pass in minutes.

  • Requirements: Because motor skills and alertness remain impaired for several hours, you must have an adult friend or family member drive you home and stay with you.

3. Intravenous (IV) Sedation

  • How it works: Medication is administered directly into your bloodstream via a gentle intravenous line, allowing Dr. Shanks to calibrate your sedation depth instantaneously with pinpoint accuracy.

  • How it feels: The closest experience to “sleeping” through your visit. Most patients close their eyes at the start and feel as though they wake up seconds later with all their dental work completed.

  • Safety First: At Golden Oak, IV sedation procedures are backed by continuous monitoring of heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and end-tidal CO2—supported by our licensed dental team and on-staff paramedic Joey.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Sedation?

Sedation dentistry is safe and beneficial for patients who:

  1. Experience mild-to-debilitating dental phobia or general anxiety disorders.

  2. Have difficulty getting or staying numb with local anesthesia alone.

  3. Have highly sensitive teeth, gums, or an easily triggered gag reflex.

  4. Need extensive oral surgery, including single, multiple, or All-on-4 dental implants.

  5. Suffer from physical limitations, TMJ jaw pain, or back/neck stiffness that makes sitting still difficult.
